2020 Hate Crime Awareness Puppet Packs and Virtual lessons During Covid

PuppetSoup were delighted to be commissioned by Monmouthshire and Newport Councils to create special virtual online lessons and deliver covid safe puppet making packs to primary schools across Monmouthshire and Newport in Wales during October and November 2020.

Covid made many of the usual school activities very challenging in 2020, however during this exciting project, PuppetSoup were able to connect schools with the joy of puppetry whilst tackling the subject of Hate Crime Awareness and helping pupils examine ‘difference’ and ’uniqueness’ through puppetry.

Every child that took part received their very own covid secure goody bag filled with craft materials and hand made puppets from PuppetSoup.

During the fun-focussed virtual lessons given from PuppetSoup’s puppet making workshops, children learnt about puppetry from around the world and went on to design and make their own unique and individual puppets.

PuppetSoup led interactive discussions and activities with the children about difference and uniqueness, using puppetry as the medium for this discussion.

The sessions were a great success and the messages around difference and uniqueness were understood and developed by the children with the help of the amazing teachers that took part in this scheme.

Many of the children were especially happy and overwhelmed to receive a craft pack that they could keep and a puppet that was theirs to take home. Hopefully because of this aspect of the project, the process was especially memorable and this will reinforce the message and consideration of difference and uniqueness.

Thank you to Heather Powell and Shajan Miah from Newport and Monmouthshire Councils for working with PuppetSoup and giving us this great opportunity to connect the arts, artists and schools for Hate Crime Awareness 2020.
