Puppet manipulation and Performance Course

This course is for performers, puppeteers, students, teachers and anyone with an interest in puppetry. Taught to you by multi award winning theatre professionals who have specifically trained and qualified in Puppetry, Performance and Design from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, London and who have had many years of performance and teaching experience.

Objective:

 

Examine how the art of puppetry works in performance by exploring the life inside the object through this exciting performance based workshop.

You will be presented with theories and challenges in puppetry and encouraged to broaden your mind about puppetry, object theatre and performance.

​

Learn notions of performance in your own body and discover how to translate these into the object. Together we will study the uncanny power of the puppet and the mechanisms the performer needs to know to bring an object to life.

This is a mixed level course available to experienced performers or to complete beginners. The course can be undertaken at any time of the year to suit your schedule providing that we have availability in ours!

 

Tuition is available for groups of adult learners.  The course is suitable for adults over 16 years of age and can be taken at your group's space (such as a rehearsal room or community hall) in our rehearsal space in the beautiful Brecon Beacons in Wales.  

 

Group booking (minimum 6 people) is usually required for this course HOWEVER if you are an individual and would like to undertake this course please get in touch as there may be spaces on another group’s course or the opportunity for us to group several individual adults together to enable the course to run.

What you will learn and do

​

You will learn techniques of performance with objects and the relationship that exists between puppet and puppeteer.

 

You will also learn to  explore the material or the life within the material design and create your own short performance.

 

The course will include the performance techniques of :

 

Bunraku puppetry

 

Glove puppetry

 

Rod puppetry

 

Object theatre

 

Physical theatre and clowning

 

How many days your course lasts is up to your group (exception will be if you are an individual joining another group).  Please discuss your objectives when booking.

 

Tea, coffee, juice and biscuits are available through the day when taking the workshop in our own space.

 

This course can be completely tailored to your needs.  Please email if you have any questions at all.

 

Days usually run from 11am – 6pm with up to an hour’s break for lunch.

 

A day course taught by the two directors of PuppetSoup, for a group of 6 people, costs from £360 (£60 per person) depending on your location.

With the one day course you will have a great introduction into the world of puppetry performance.
